Pelican Brief Issue 1, Term 3

  • From the Principal

From the Principal

Good afternoon,

As you are aware, I have stepped up as Acting Principal whilst Mrs Watson is on maternity leave. In the same breath, we wish the Watson family a huge congratulations on their new baby boy, George! We can't wait to meet him and add another little boy into the Birdsville Pelican Pals!

Staff updates:

  • The teacher vacancy brief is expected to go out by the end of this week.
  • We welcomed Lesley Murray at the beginning of term as our Business Manager and Teacher Aide.
  • Nell Braun has also started as a Teacher Aide who is assisting with the facilitation of playgroup.
  • Isaac Birchley is looking after the maintenance of the grounds and cleaning for the time being.

Events and Excursions:

August saw the Variety Bash come through and offer us an $8000 donation towards our Sensory Garden which is to be built over the September holidays. Thank you to the P&C and Social club for making this breakfast a success. It never goes unnoticed the effort put into these volunteering positions and giving up your free time to ensure the students will benefit and have fantastic memories.

We also had our Book Week Trail, thank you to all the organisations and businesses who opened up their doors to us. The students and station children had a fantastic time exploring their town and reading different books along the way, of course not to mention all the treats they got as well!

This fortnight coming we are very busy:

  • Tuesday 3rd September - RFDS plane simulator
  • Wednesday 4th September - Tennis Day
  • Thursday 5th September - Bertalli's Chips and Crack-Up Sisters Workshop
  • Friday 13th September - Cafe

Excursion consent forms will be sent home this afternoon.

Curriculum:

Birdsville SS have been very busy inside and outside the classroom!

🌈Outside, students have been caring for their garden so well that we have been able to harvest over 100 cherry tomatoes each week as well as huge bunches of basil! Recently they planted silverbeet, lettuce and bok choi.

➕ In Mathematics student have been working hard on improving their mathematics skills through daily skip counting competitions, multiplicative, addition and subtraction strategies. We are now looking at shapes and measurement!

📓In English students have been homing in on their listening and speaking skills, gearing up for their class presentations.

🔬In Science students have been creating their very own toys that push or pull and our year 6 students have been creating an electrical circuit that buzzes when the wire handle touches the wire course.

💻In Tech students have been creating online profiles with facts about their favourite animal.

🌎In HASS students have been learning about special places and the characteristics of places from local to national scale, and how and why places are similar and different.

🏃‍♀️In HPE students have been working on fundamental movement skills and how to keep themselves and others safe.

Expectations

As it is quite hot, please make sure your child is wearing weather appropriate clothing. Amber gave everyone a pair of shorts and/or skort at the beginning of the year. If you require more, we have lots for sale.

Please be mindful of drop of times. We start school at 8:45, anytime from 8:30am is acceptable to drop off your child and this provides enough time to change into their shoes and get ready for the day.

Lesley offers supervision in the library from 8:30am on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. I supervise in the classroom from 8:30am on Tuesday's and Friday's.

Notices

  • This week I will be sending home forms to request an appointment time for Parent/Student/Teacher interviews for week 10.
  • Please remember we are always looking for a community reader for our library on Thursday mornings. The students love when a member from the community comes into their school!

Kind regards,
Harriet Birchley
