From the Principal

Welcome back to Term Two. As always we have had a flying start to the term and it isn't slowing down anytime soon.

In Week Two we had the Push to the Bush Veteran's visit us for ANZAC Day. The Veteran's joined us on Wednesday and shared many stories about their time serving in the Defence Force and even tested out our acting skills with a short skit. The Veteran's answered all of our questions that we had, like "What did you eat? Did you get strawberries". The Veteran's then joined our Pelican Pals Playgroup on Friday for some ANZAC themed activities and a book.

In Week Three we also had Corporal Steven Morton join us in Uniform to discuss his service in the Army. The students asked more questions and were able to get an insight to what the Army involves today.

This term we have a lot of excursions/incursions happening (see below for upcoming T2 events). More information will be sent home with students over the next week in regards to Under 8s, The Twits and Lucy Lockett.

Upcoming events in Term Two include:

  • Community library - Every Thursday 8:45-9:15am
  • Pelican Pals- Every Friday 8:45-11:00am
  • First Five Forever- Thursday 16th May and Thursday 13th May
  • Under 8s Day- Friday 17th May
  • The Twits (in Bedourie)- Wednesday 22nd May
  • Lucy Lockett Puppet Show- Tuesday 4th June
  • Birdsville SS Cafe- 21st June

Our community library is on every Thursday morning and we are still looking for community readers to volunteer their time to read a book, please contact me if you are available.

Our Annual Improvement Plan has now been finalised and was discussed at the P&C meeting at the end of last term. This year we have one school priority: Strengthening community partnerships through a rich, contextually relevant curriculum for all staff students and community.

The Birdsville Bakery will be providing us a tuckshop this season, a note will go home this week with more information!

I hope you all had a lovely Mother's day.

From the Teacher's Desk 26th April

Welcome back to Term 2!

ANZAC day

This Anzac Day we enjoyed meeting and talking to the Veteranan's and Corporal Steven Morton! All the students were eagerly awaiting thier arrival and had many of their questions answered about the Army. The students walked with pride in the parade and we had lots of discussions around how the Poppy symbolises ANZAC Day whilst painting them.

New class pets

Our Spiny Stick Insects arrived via plane, and they have been settling into their new enclosure! The students all brainstormed some names and we put them all into a spinner and the winning names were Popcorn and Charlotte. We have a boy and a girl!

English, Maths, Science

In English the students have been idenfitying the difference between informative and narrative facts and have been enjoying finding out out all the facts about different topics. Particulary the informative texts about stick insects and bugs!

In Maths, all studetns have been doing so well at partitioning numbers up to 999! They particularly love using the unifix cubes, crayons, paddle pop sticks and MAB blocks to help them create these numbers.

In Science, we have been learning about life cycles and now that our pets have arrived we are going to hone in on the life cycles of Spiny Stick Insects! Our older students have been exploring how mould grows on bread and is about to start their mould growing experiment!

Playgroup

Our Pelican Pals have been growing and learning so much over this term. Increased exposure to fine motor, gross motor, music, art, literacy and numeracy play concepts have strengthened their skills and developed deeper interests across all these learnign areas.  The Pelican Pals are beginning to know the morning's routine, with many of them standing and listening in Morning Circle and elbow bumping during postive primer!

Belonging tree

Our Belonging Tree is starting to form up in the Library. Please send in a family photo if you have not done so already so we can add them to the growing photo tree!

Uniforms

Uniforms have been sent home, stay tuned to our Facebook for more information on uniform and how to purchase more if you need.

Garden

Our garden is thriving with basil and cherry tomatoes! Last week the students planted more herbs (parsley, chives and coriander) seeing as though herbs seem to do quite well in our little school garden!

Kind regards,

Harriet Birchley
