Pelican Brief Issue 7, Term 3
From the Principal

Welcome back to term 3! This is my first newsletter back since returning to work last week. Thank you to Mrs Birchley and Miss Venessa who continually keep the continuity of learning happening in our classroom and thank you to Eliza and Janet for coming to Birdsville as acting Principals for the two weeks.
It was so lovely to return to the classroom and see all the learning that has been happening in the first two weeks of the term. Although sickness has tried to bring us down we are still soldering through. However, a reminder, that if your child is sick please stay home.
Next Friday our P&C are hosting our next sports event for the year... our Athletics Carnival. Please keep an eye out on both soical media pages for updates on this over the weekend and throughout next week. We have decided to host these events after school to get the most out of community involvement. So please come along and participate in as many activities...every participation gets a point towards your house, the house points are very close at the moment!!!
On Monday we celebrated NAIDOC week. We were very lucky to have so many community members involved. It was a fantastic day and the kids and staff had a lot of fun! Thank you to everyone who either hosted an activity or came into school to participate...we can't wait for next year!
Week 5 activities:
- Next Thursday our kindy and Prep students will be attending first five forever, this is a fantastic service offered by the council once a month. We are very lucky that we have this service available to us and our students love participating.
-Friday we have the CLaW team visiting us again, Eliza and Megan will be working with all staff and students while they are here.
Week 6 activities:
-Monday 14th August, our flying pastor will be visiting, if you have any changes that you would like to make for your childs participation in this please contact the school.
- Tuesday 15th-Friday 18th Harriet is attending a PD in Longreach, please note that as I will be the only staff member on site between these dates email response times will be longer for week 6.
I hope you all have a fabulous weekend and we will hopefully see you all at the athletics carnival next Friday!

Hello BSS families!
I have been so impressed with the improvements all the students have made in their reading and spelling! Keep up the great work. A reminder that families have access to the Mathletetics and Reading Eggs program which the children can play at home on the computer, phone or iPad. I have attached the login links below. Please email me if you need their userame and password at hbirc14@eq.edu.au .
Curriculum
Next week we are having our group discussion sharing our point of view on Flying Foxes, whereas prep and grade 1 will be discussing a topic of their own interest. We have been practicing this everyday and we are getting more and more confident with talking in front of others, voicing our opinions, clarifying and even challenging others opinions too.
We have just finished our maths unit on number and algebra and next week will be starting our learning on shape!
The students have been so excited about our new technologies unit. They have been tasked with supporting the needs of the community in terms of produce. They have been doing up their own survey's to send out to the community to identify what produce the community needs more of. When the data comes back they will graph the results and decipher what the community wants more of and then if it matches with the planting requirements of our geographical location, they will plant these items in our greenhouse and eventually sell them to the community.
Science has been full of fun, hands-on experiments and learning about the physical sciences such as movement, light, sound and heat!
Kindy
Kindy has been so invested with their airport interest. Over the past couple of weeks, they have created their own mini airport out of recyled materials and have been using books about planes to identify the differernt areas such as a hangar, airstrip and air traffic control tower! Today they are adding a sky to their mini airport so the planes made out of pegs and paddle pop sticks can pretend to fly through. Kindy are looking forward to their excursion to the Birdsville airport. They plan to take their plane they constrcuted out of recycled boxes and decorated with paint and craft and pretend to fly it there.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Just a friendly reminder that school starts at 8:45am, children can arrive as early as 8:30am but no earlier. This is crucial for supervision policies and requirements as prior to 8:30am we are using this time to get the learning ready for the day.
Kind regards,
Mrs Birchley
