Pelican Brief Issue 4 Term 2
From the Principal

What a fantastic two weeks we have had. We are very lucky to live in such a great community. Last Friday our P&C ran their first sporting carnival of the year, our "Fun Run". We were lucky enough to have this coincide with the Simpson Desert Ultra. This year we have brought back the school sporting houses and we have now allocated all community members that attended or intended to come to Friday's fun run into a house. We also included the SDU participants in this and they were able to allocate a participation point to either Burke or Wills. I have tallied up the points from last Friday. We tallied them as follows:
- 3 points- students who ran in the fun run
- 2 points- sponsors
- 1 point- any other community member or SDU participant
It was a very close call, However, I am able to confirm that the winner of our first sports day was....Burke! (By one point). We still have our Athletics carnival and swimming carnival left for this year and I encourage you all to get involved to keep earning points for your houses. The winning house of the year will be presented with a trophy at the end of year awards.
This week we had ladies from the Centre of Learning and Wellbeing team visiting, they had the opportunity to work with myself, Harriet and the kids. It is always great to have people visit our school and help celebrate all of the hard work that happens in our little community.
Yesterday, I attended First Five Forever with Lilly. We attend this each month with either just Lilly or if it is a Kindy Thursday, with Lilly and Elle. Again, this is just another fantastic program that we are lucky to have available to us. Thank you Courtney for the effort that you go to, to make these sessions so engaging for our children.
The P&C cookbooks have arrived!! If you have ordered one, you will recieve yours shortly or they are available to pick up from the school. If you would like to purchase one you can by emailing the P&C or dropping into school.
End of term is quickly approaching, we have one more week left in the classroom then ALL of our kids are off to Windorah for Sports camp.
We had a P&C meeting on Wednesday evening and they have voted on a new format for our report cards. We have now moved to comment less report cards for all Learning Areas. Students will recieve an overall grade and effort mark for each learning area for that semester. In addition to this they will also recieve a behaviour comment and overall comment which will include learning goals for Literacy and Numeracy the following semester.
Lastly, as many of you would know, I am getting married during these school holidays. I will be on Long Service Leave for the first two weeks of Term Three. As soon as I know who will be replacing me I will inform you. This will be known to us within the next week.
I hope you all had a great weekend.

From Mrs Birchley

What a great couple of weeks we have had. My favourtie in particular was the Fun Run, we had so many more people than expected and I am sure the students won't forget this experience any time soon!
With Amber continuing Athletics next term, our students will be ready to go for their Athletics Carnival in week 5 next term!
Everyone has been doing so well with getting through their assessments lately.
We have finished our explicit lessons on our Zones of Regulation and everyone receievd their Zones license. This means they know how to identify what zone they are feeling and what tool they can use to bring themselves back to the green zone or wake up from the blue zone. We have a sensory tub here at school where their tools are located.
Just a friendly reminder that school starts at 8:45am and students can arrive from 8:30am onwards, no earlier. This is due to supervision and policy requirements. School finishes at 2:45pm and it is really important the students stay till this time to allow them to finish their learning. I have attahced a flyer on why everyday counts at school.
Reminders:
- Athletics after school will continue in Term 3
- School hours are 8:45am - 2:45pm
- Students can arrive from 8:30 onwards, no earlier
- Everyday counts, attending a full school day helps students learn better, make friends, be happier, and have a brighter future (Department of Education, n.d.)
Kind regards,
Harriet Birchley
